Safety and Security at Wake Forest
At Wake Forest, the safety and wellbeing of our students, faculty and staff is our top priority. In partnership with University Marketing and Communications (UMC), University Police (UPD) will provide timely information on what to do during an emergency through the University’s communication systems. The Safety and Security team also leads efforts to enhance classroom safety, encourage safe habits and build strong connections across campus. The resources below outline how you will be notified in the event of an emergency and how you can stay engaged in ongoing safety initiatives.
How WFU Will Communicate With You in the Event of an Emergency
Wake Alert
- Wake Alert is the University’s mass notification system for communicating about safety and security situations.
- In an emergency or when a safety response is needed, alerts may be sent via text, email, phone call, the University website, social media, the WakeSafe app, computer screen takeover, indoor/outdoor warning systems and campus-wide audio/visual systems.
WakeSafe App
- The WakeSafe app turns your cell phone into a personal security device.
- The app shares emergency and safety notifications and provides direct access to UPD, 911 emergency services, emergency location sharing, social escape, and a peer-to-peer Friend Walk tool.
Here’s what to do
- In an emergency, call 911 from a campus phone or 336.758.5911 from a mobile phone to reach University Police directly.
- Download the free WakeSafe app and activate notifications.
- Confirm your mobile phone number is correct in Workday to ensure you receive alerts.
- Follow Wake Alert on X (@WakeAlert) and Facebook (Wake Alert).
- Download Alertus, a tool that allows University Police to send a pop-up, full-screen laptop warning when immediate safety actions are needed.
WakeAlert, Alertus and the WakeSafe app allow the University to quickly disseminate important safety information and instructions to the entire campus community. Downloading the WakeSafe app and keeping your contact information up-to-date are key actions for staying informed in an emergency.
Wake Alert Emergency Response Training Requirement
To promote a culture of safety and preparedness, all faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to complete the Wake Alert Emergency Response Training each year. This brief, on-demand course, available in Workday Learning, equips employees with essential information for responding to various emergency scenarios on campus.
Newly hired faculty and staff are required to complete this training during their onboarding process. It is strongly recommended that all employees review this training annually to stay informed of updated protocols and best practices.
Staying Active and Safe
We encourage students to stay active throughout the year while also being mindful of their surroundings, especially when off campus. Keep these tips in mind:
- Jog or walk with a friend — there’s safety in numbers.
- Wear reflective gear — especially when out during low-light hours.
- Use sidewalks and crosswalks — never assume vehicles will stop.
- Stay alert — avoid distractions; if listening to music, use one earbud instead of two.
- Stick to familiar, well-lit routes — avoid isolated or poorly lit areas.
- Let someone know — share your route and estimated return time with a friend.
Classroom Security Enhancements
Technology has been installed to enhance safety and security for faculty, staff and students in the classroom. When activated, the locks and buttons immediately notify UPD of an emergency. Thumb-turn locks, also called turn-and-release locks, secure the room’s entry points while allowing users to easily open and close doors from the inside.
Community Engagement
UPD is dedicated to building strong, positive relationships within our campus community through open dialogue and mutual respect. To ensure our policies and practices reflect the values and needs of all members, we actively seek community input. Below are several ways you can connect with us and contribute to shaping a safe and supportive environment.
Police Advisory Board
The Police Advisory Board (PAB) is an important campus resource that fosters a transparent, accountable, and collaborative relationship between UPD and the campus community. The PAB was established in 2009 to enhance understanding of UPD responsibilities and communication with the campus community.
With representation from faculty, staff, students (graduate and undergraduate), campus safety professionals and UPD, the PAB is composed of a diverse group of stakeholders, ensuring that the PAB reflects the interests of the broader campus community. By engaging with the PAB, members of the campus community help ensure that campus safety efforts are transparent, equitable, and reflective of shared values.
To submit a public safety issue or concern to the board, email pab@wfu.edu.
Share Your Feedback
To further enhance our commitment to open communication and community feedback, UPD also launched a Community Engagement Survey. Following each interaction, community members may receive a short text message with a link to a brief, confidential survey. Your feedback helps UPD to continuously improve our services, foster accountability and ensure our practices align with the community’s expectations.
Community Events
We believe building strong relationships is key to a safe campus, and we invite you to join us for some fun and engaging events! Join us for Pizza with Police, an informal lunch to connect with officers, or Snowcones for Downloads, where you can enjoy a treat while learning about the WakeSafe app. These events strengthen bonds and promote open communication.
Your involvement is crucial in helping us maintain a campus where everyone feels safe, included and supported. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact UPD at police@wfu.edu.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
Best regards,
Chief Regina Lawson
