Wake Forest University Police Department was one of the first private colleges in North Carolina to obtain arrest authority by becoming sworn as special deputies under the Forsyth County Sheriff. On August 30, 1993 the department obtained independent arrest authority by completing requirements to become certified as North Carolina Special Police. Special Police authority is granted by the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office Company Police Program and authorized by NC General Statute 74E. In 2005, the Campus Police Act was passed which allowed private colleges and universities to separate themselves from proprietary security and railroad police. On July 28, 2005 the department transitioned to Campus Police governed by North Carolina General Statute 74G.
